Lindsay McCrum’s Male Fiction, currently on view at MODERNISM WEST, is a vivid fever dream depicted in pigment-rich silence that delves into the construction of male identity. In this new body of work, McCrum directs her lens toward the most mythologized gestures of masculinity, including its codes, poses, and projections, and then quietly destabilizes them. The result is an evocative and meticulously staged meditation on men, seen not in action but in atmosphere. The title is revealing, as Male Fiction suggests both a genre and a fabrication. These are not portraits of men, but rather portraits of male archetypes that are performed and deeply haunted.
